| dc.description.abstract | The rapid integration of digital technologies into production and distribution processes has given rise to "platform capitalism," a new organizational form that has radically transformed traditional labor control mechanisms. In Turkey, the "sole proprietorship courier" (esnaf kurye) model has become a structural employment form, particularly with the post-pandemic surge in the quick-commerce (Q-commerce) sector. While platforms present this model through discourses of "being one's own boss" and "flexibility," in practice, it produces a multi-layered regime of domination that encompasses the economic, bodily, and psychological existence of labor through algorithmic management. The primary problem of this study is to decipher the structural contradiction between the autonomy discourse offered by platforms and the algorithmic surveillance experienced in the daily practices of couriers. This research treats algorithmic management not merely as a technical work organization but as a technology of power that records every movement as data, defines norms statistically, and legitimizes exploitation under a mask of "technical objectivity." The study constructs its theoretical foundation upon several critical axes. First, the political economy of platform capitalism is addressed within a historical continuity. The process of labor deskilling and the transfer of "tacit knowledge" to technical systems, which began with the Babbage Principle, is undergoing a digital evolution through artificial intelligence. As explained by Pasquinelli’s "eye of the master" metaphor, AI functions as an administrative apparatus that transfers the authority of the foreman to data-driven automated systems. Second, the institutional architecture of control is explained through Stark and Pais’s "Möbius strip" concept. This structure places the courier in a paradoxical status: simultaneously at the center of the system (under intense surveillance) and legally completely outside of it (as an independent contractor). This unique labor regime is further explored through "Digital Taylorism" and "Biopolitics." The "tyranny of the algorithm," which replaces Taylorist "clock tyranny," opens a biopolitical field of domination that transforms not only the production process but also the bodily and life safety of the worker into statistical risks. | |
