Wetland-based water treatment systems provide a sustainable alternative to conventional water treatment methods, offering significant socioeconomic benefits across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Economically, wetlands—both natural and constructed—are cost-effective, reducing infrastructure and operational costs while also providing long-term financial benefits, such as revenue from byproducts like biomass. Wetlands help mitigate carbon emissions, contributing to cost savings associated with climate change mitigation strategies. Socially, wetland-based water treatment systems enhance community well-being by providing essential ecosystem services that improve public health, support recreational opportunities, and foster educational initiatives. These systems also play a crucial role in maintaining cultural values and aesthetics, particularly for communities that are closely tied to wetland ecosystems. Environmentally, wetlands support biodiversity, create habitats for wildlife, and improve water quality by naturally filtering pollutants. Their role in climate regulation, particularly through carbon sequestration, further emphasizes their importance in addressing global environmental challenges. This chapter provides a comprehensive discussion of these socioeconomic benefits, highlighting the multifaceted advantages of utilizing wetlands for water treatment.
