Youth and economic growth in Somalia
(İstanbul Gelişim Üniversitesi Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, 2024) Mohamed, Khalid Adan
This study examines the consequence of youth on economic growth in Somalia from 1990 - 2020. To create an economic model and assess the data, econometric methods of the OLS model were utilized, the model provides valuable insights into the relationships between independent variables like Youth Unemployment rate, Employment rate, Gross Capital Formation and Total Urban Population and dependent variable called real GDP. All variables underwent the unit root test, and some of them were discovered not to be stationary in the first difference model, but they are all stationary at the second level. We examined Ramsey reset test, there is no apparent need to include the squares of fitted values in the model. We investigated heteroscedasticity, the test suggests there might be heteroscedasticity, but the evidence is not overwhelmingly strong. After examining multicollinearity by VIF test, it is revealed that there is multicollinearity problem in the model. In order to prevent the ineffective results arising out of multi collinearity, ridge regression is imposed. The study set up a strong long-term correlation between Youth and Economic Growth in Somalia. The research effort's empirical findings were created on the impact of Youth on the expansion of the Somali economy. A policy recommendation was made The Federal Government of Somalia should prioritize initiatives aimed at reducing the youth unemployment rate. Enhancing educational systems to meet the demands of the job market and fostering partnerships with industries for practical training can better equip the youth with skills relevant to the evolving economy.
