Insights from sloshing experiments in a rectangular hydrophobic tank
(Elsevier Science Inc, 2023) Korkmaz, Fatih C.; Guzel, Bulent
The wave impingement on the side walls due to the oscillation of a rectangular tank under harmonic sway motion is analysed experimentally with hydrophobic coated and uncoated tank surfaces. Impact pressures and free surface deformations are compared in three water filling levels over an excitation frequency range encompassing the first natural frequency. The reduced hydrodynamic loads acting on the tank walls are observed under hydrophobic effects and discussed in detail. Experimental observations clearly indicate that there is a strong effect of the solid surface properties on the free surface elevation, wave generation and pressure distribution. In particular, major changes have been traced around the resonance frequency due to more dominant tangential flow and altered wave form, which results in lower peak pressure values with increased water movement within the tank under the hydrophobic effects.

On the effects of the number of baffles in sloshing dynamics
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2-4 PARK SQUARE, MILTON PARK, ABINGDON OR14 4RN, OXON, ENGLAND, 2023) Korkmaz, Fatih C.; Güzel, Bülent
This study examines the effect of the number of perforated baffles in sloshing phenomenon in a partially filled tank. The natural frequencies in one-, two- and no-baffle cases are experimentally obtained; change in natural frequencies and reduction in sloshing impacts due to baffles are reported. It is observed that adding the second baffle has a minor effect in damping the sloshing loads at non-resonance frequencies in comparison to ones obtained in one-baffle sloshing tests. Although the natural frequency is significantly increased and pressure distribution profile is altered at higher oscillation frequencies in twobaffle case, the significant reduction in peak pressure values is observed at the frequencies near the natural frequency in one-baffle case. The results indicate that the number of the baffles should be optimised considering the natural frequency of the carrier and external excitation frequencies for the purpose of weight minimisation, fast loading and unloading of the tanks.

Wave Impact Loads on Vertical Circular Cylinder and the Effect of Hydrophobic Surface
(TUBITAK, 2023) Al-Beity, Abdallah Mohamed Alwy; Korkmaz, Fatih C.; Guzel, Bulent
This study presents experimental research on the wave forces affecting cylindrical legs on offshore platforms. The aim was to determine pressure distributions and deformations in the surface properties of altered cylinders by applying a hydrophobic coating. The results show that the hydrophobic coating increases the angle at which water droplets hit the surface, reducing water adhesion. The study used wave loads of 9 cm amplitude and 0.7 Hz frequency, three pressure sensors, and a strain gauge to measure pressure distributions and surface deformations. Findings show that the pressure response for hydrophobic surfaces varied based on the sensor's location, with a decrease in maximum pressure or impact time. Strain measurements for hydrophobic surfaces were 15% higher than for uncoated surfaces due to structural deformation caused by surface property changes. Additionally, hydrophobic cylinders experienced a water rise of at least 1.5 cm compared to uncoated cylinders due to pressure distribution on the hydrophobic surface. The findings suggest that surface modifications, such as hydrophobic coatings, can significantly impact the response of cylindrical structures to wave forces, providing valuable information for offshore platform design and maintenance. Image processing supports this observation, which indicates the variation in the size of the water body to which the surface is exposed. © 2023, TUBITAK. All rights reserved.
