A novel method for combating desertification in northern Nigeria
(Innovare Academics Sciences Pvt. Ltd, 2020) Abdul, Ahmad Yahaya; Juanil, David Martin Daud; Dodod, Yakubu Aminu
Globally, it is widely recognized that desertification is a serious threat to arid and semiarid environments-which cover 40% of the global land surface and are populated by approximately 1 billion humans. Nigeria as a nation is not left out as desertification hits the northern part of Nigeria the most. An estimate a range of (50 to 75) % of the affected states in Nigeria experiences a serious climatic problem and are liable to drought and lack of plant growth and efficiency may finally set in. Many techniques are in place, still, the problem persists. The study used the (Melnikovas, 2018) 'Research onion for futures studies adopted by (Saunders et al., 2016). In the 'Onion process', the ordinary research methodology is introduced in the shape of an 'Onion', The adapted modified onion model for futures studies, thus extend the original six (6) research layers to seven (7) main layers of the research layers in the new model. Thus, the interpretation of the method used is that the second layer in the order of research method was used as an approach of further study, the further study thus represent new proposed model which is an up shoot of the other six layers already carried out by (Abdul, 2020). The second layer is called Approach to further studies. This was used to support the novel method developed in this study. The novel method sees the combination of all the traditional and modern techniques used for combating degradation in northern Nigeria by digitizing the process with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as an engine mechanism to close the gap other employed methods could not close. The proposed model is called five (5), one (1), and technology (T) written '51T model' for combating desertification in northern Nigeria. © 2020 by Advance Scientific Research.
