Effects of Ground Strain and Pipeline Orientation on Pipeline Damage during Earthquakes
(Amer Soc Civil Engineers, 2022) Toprak, Selcuk; Nacaroglu, Engin; Ceylan, Muhammet; O'Rourke, T. D.
Pipeline damage correlations are used for risk studies of water distribution systems. One of the parameters correlated with pipeline damage in permanent ground deformation zones is horizontal (lateral) ground strain. Some damage correlations use the maximum absolute value of the two principal strains around the pipelines as the lateral ground strain parameter. However, strains caused by lateral ground movements can be resolved into components such as axial strains in the direction of the pipelines. Performing such a process for a large urban water distribution system is a relatively complicated task and development of damage relationships requires comprehensive ground deformation and pipeline data. The unprecedented database following the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence in New Zealand (NZ) provides an opportunity to explore the effects of ground strain and pipeline orientation on pipeline damage during earthquakes. This study presents the GIS methodology for using pipeline orientation to evaluate pipeline network damage caused by ground deformation during earthquakes. The geospatial analyses results indicate differences in the responses of asbestos cement (AC) and cast iron (CI) segmental pipelines under compressive and tensile axial strains.

Impact of Seismic Geohazards on water supply systems and pipeline performance: Insights from the 2023 Kahramanmaras Earthquakes
(Elsevier, 2024) Toprak, Selçuk; Wham, Brad P.; Nacaroğlu, Engin; Ceylan, Muhammet; Dal, Oğuz; Şentürk, Adem Eren
This study delves into the profound repercussions of geohazards on water supply systems, specifically in the aftermath of the Kahramanmaras earthquakes. The influence of these geohazards was far-reaching, impacting a vast geographical expanse affected by the seismic events. The primary focus of this investigation centers on the provinces of Adiyaman, Gaziantep, and Hatay, providing representative damage examples from the earthquakeaffected areas. The study illustrates various types of pipe failures induced by geohazards such as fault displacements, landslides, and liquefaction. The analysis encompasses diverse cases of damage, starting from the water resources, progressing through issues at transmission lines, and extending to challenges faced by pumping and treatment facilities. Key aspects of damages and geohazards are presented, shedding light on the intricate dynamics of these interactions. It is crucial to note the scarcity of real cases in the existing literature, emphasizing the need for extensive site investigations and dedicated research endeavors to construct a comprehensive database of case histories in this domain. This study addresses this gap, contributing valuable insights into the tangible impacts of geohazards on water supply systems. By comprehending and effectively addressing the risks associated with geohazards, water supply organizations can fortify the safety and resilience of their infrastructure. The findings presented herein offer a foundation for informed decision-making and strategic planning, fostering a proactive approach to mitigate potential damages and enhance the overall robustness of water supply systems in regions prone to seismic events and associated geohazards.

Performance of water systems during the February 6th Kahramanmaras earthquakes
(SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, 2455 TELLER RD, THOUSAND OAKS, CA 91320, 2025) Toprak, Selçuk; Wham, Brad Parker; Naçaroğlu, Engin; Ceylan, Muhammet; Dal, Oğuz
February 6th, 2023 Mw7.7 and Mw7.6 Kahramanmaras earthquakes caused severe damage to lifeline systems across 13 provinces in Turkiye and regions of Northern Syria. Impacts to water and wastewater infrastructure were significant, requiring the mobilization of support from across the region, and around the world to provide life-sustaining service to the approximately 14 million impacted people. This study documents water infrastructure performance during the event and efforts required to repair damage during the days and months that followed. With a particular focus on water transmission and distribution pipelines, details acquired during multiple field reconnaissance visits and meetings with officials are provided for the most heavily impacted water utilities. Both general recovery efforts and specific examples of earthquake-induced pipeline damage are incorporated to draw conclusions relative to emergency preparedness, resilient network design, and communication across agencies as well as with the public.

The aftermath of 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquakes: evaluation of strong motion data, geotechnical, building, and infrastructure issues
(SPRINGER, ONE NEW YORK PLAZA, SUITE 4600 , NEW YORK, NY 10004, UNITED STATES, 2025) Toprak, Selçuk; Zulfikar, Abdullah Can; Mutlu, Ahu; Tuğsal, Ülgen Mert; Nacaroğlu, Engin; Karabulut, Savaş; Ceylan, Muhammet; Özdemir, Kamer; Parlak, Sedat; Dal, Oğuz; Karimzadeh, Sadra
This paper presents the fndings of feld observations conducted in the aftermath of the earthquakes that struck the Pazarcik (Mw7.7) and Elbistan (Mw7.6) in Kahramanmaras province, Turkey on February 6th, 2023. The earthquakes, occurring on the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ), resulted in more than 50,000 losses of life and damage of more than 1.5 million properties across 11 provinces in Turkey. Field observations presented herein encompass seismological and strong ground motion data, geotechnical observations, as well as damage assessments of underground and above ground structures in various provinces and districts. The types and reasons of the structural damages were discussed. The study also examined the efects of high acceleration values and distribution of strong ground motions on the performance of structures. Soil liquefaction problems were observed in many locations such as Golbasi and Iskenderun. The paper highlights the geology, tectonics, strong motion characteristics, surface deformations, geotechnical and structural aspects, and the evaluation of lifelines in the afected area. Furthermore, the authors provide initial recommendations for improving disaster management, evaluating building stock, prioritizing urban transformation, strengthening infrastructure systems, addressing soil-building interaction issues, ensuring security measures during search and rescue eforts, utilizing satellite imagery efectively, considering seismic efects on water infrastructure, and taking a holistic approach to earthquake efects in industrial facilities.
