    Ameliorating Climate Change Impacts on the Built Environment

    Climate change has been a serious hindrance to developing the built environment for decades, endangering the innovative ambition to achieve the Agenda 2030 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). As a result, adaptation and mitigation strategies are attracting increasing interest on the world stage, and organizations are working together to provide a better built environment for human habitation. Through empirical research technique, this study provides adequate information that is lacking in past studies on how to attenuate the consequences of climate change on the built environment as an urban landscape and subsequent needs for human adaptability. This study's goals are as follows: (i) to explore the predictors of climate change indicators, and (ii) to suggest climate change mitigations and adaptation strategies. Logistic regression analyses of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software package Version 22 (version 22), were used to explore the quantitative survey via descriptive analysis to obtain frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Similarly, the consequences of climate change in the built environment, as determined by Principal Component Analysis, were explored. The study’s outcome includes [i] important predictors of climate change, and [ii] Approaches for minimizing the effects of climate change. The study's findings revealed that reducing the consequences of climate change on the built environment will improve and safeguard the urban landscape for several decades to come. Parts of the study’s recommendations include urgent actions toward integrating climate change interventions into government decisions, initiatives, and management in Nigeria. © 2023 by authors.     Built environment transformation in Nigeria: the effects of a regenerative framework

    The promise of a healthier, more comfortable, and more productive way of life has fueled a rapid technological transition, and a regenerative built environment has emerged as the tagline to denote the recent sustainable development. In the built environment, the regenerative paradigm has emerged as a transformative approach that goes beyond mere sustainability, aiming to restore, renew, and enhance the ecosystems affected by human activities. However, the concept of the regenerative paradigm and its potential to foster sustainable development has been understudied in recent time. Therefore, this paper explores how we can transform the built environment in the face of the present impacts of climate change using a new regenerative paradigm concept. The objectives of the study are: (i) to explore the predictors of climate change, (ii) to determine the negative impacts of environmental issues on inhabitants' health, and (iii) to explore adaptive climate change strategies for Nigeria's regenerative built environment. The study sample consisted of 235 stratified respondents' opinions from within the built environment in southwestern Nigeria collected via a self-administered questionnaire. The collected quantitative data was analysed using SPSS (version 22) logistic regression analysis. The major results of the analysis revealed: (i) the ten most important predictors of climate change indicators, (ii) the existence of negative consequences of the impacts of climate change on inhabitants' health in southwestern regions of Nigeria, and (iii) a significant (p & LE; 0.05) in all regenerative factors: planting native species has the highest & beta; coefficient of 0.499, followed by the biophilic approach (0.494), the establishment of a city's tree canopy (0.467), the creation of a green functional green space (0.436), the use of smart landscaping techniques (0.388), and the development of a healthy watershed (0.314). This indicates that to have a regenerative built environment it is essential to create a functional green space, plant native species, establish a city's tree canopy, create a healthy watershed, and render a biophilic approach. The study's recommendations include urgent action to integrate climate change interventions into the decision-making processes, initiatives, and development plans of the Nigerian government. This integration should prioritize sustainable practices within the built environment, considering the regenerative paradigm's potential to address climate change impact effectively.

    A comparative framework analysis of the strategies, challenges and opportunities for sustainable smart cities

    The goals of the contemporary environment in this new era of the Internet of Things (IoT), digital technologies (DTs) and smartisation are to enhance economic, social and environmental sustainability while also concentrating on the citizens' quality of life. As these initiatives advance, more determination is required to offer effective approaches to the problem posed by the accomplishment of the Sustainable City Project in Nigeria as a developing nation. To address these problems and facilitate the process for Nigeria's major cities to become 'smart cities', universities, research institutions and other stakeholders must collaborate alongside. This chapter aims to establish a model or framework that addresses urban intelligence, social inclusion, resilience and technological innovation, mobility, urbanisation and residents' quality of life. The reviews of the characteristics and management of smart cities in developed countries were documented to serve as a comparison study of the cities in African sub-Saharan regions. This will assist in building models that can produce predictions about possible smart solutions in the areas of mobility, urban infrastructure and ecological problems brought on by climate change in African cities. This chapter brings attention to the body of knowledge by envisioning the benefits to the government and citizens in making appropriate decisions to enhance sustainable development, a better resilience environment, improved infrastructure, smart city environments and residents' quality of life.     Energy-Efficient Urban Landscapes: Advancing the Built Environment through Sustainable Ecological Planning

    The growing urgency of addressing environmental challenges highlights the need for research on their impacts on the built environment, particularly in urban areas where these issues adversely affect residents' well-being. Despite increasing recognition of climate-related challenges, limited attention has been given to adaptive strategies that harness local ecological resources, such as indigenous flora and green infrastructure, to promote energy efficiency and sustainability. This study examines strategies to enhance Nigeria’s urban landscapes through energy-efficient approaches in response to ongoing environmental changes. The objectives include: (i) identifying key factors influencing climate change and (ii) evaluating adaptive strategies for enhancing energy efficiency and resilience in urban environments. This research employs a total of 235 surveys amounting to 78.30 per cent of the sample that was gathered and examined. The Logistic regression analyses of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software package Version 22 were used to analyze the collected data from online survey distributions. The results reveal that all factors related to climate change adaptation are statistically significant (p-values < 0.05), underscoring their critical role in fostering energy efficiency and resilience. The findings provide robust evidence for prioritizing national and regional adaptation strategies. Recommendations include integrating the significant factors into urban planning policies, emphasizing energy-efficient solutions, and fostering community engagement and education to promote awareness and adoption of adaptive measures. Future research should explore emerging technologies and interdisciplinary approaches to address energy efficiency, and climate risks, and offer a comprehensive framework for sustainable urban transformation.

    This research offers valuable perspectives on the nexus between urbanization and the smart environment within the Najran city, Saudi Arabian context. Najran City, with its diverse districts and evolving urban landscape, is at the forefront of adopting advanced technologies and participatory governance models to create a resilient, environmentally conscious, and sustainable urban environment, likewise positioning itself as a model of smart urban development but is also fostering an innovation-driven community equipped to address the difficulties and exploit the prospects given by the 21st century. The study systematically analyzes the multifaceted factors of smart city variables in Saudi Arabia and their direct impact on urban sustainability through extensive quantitative investigations. This study reveals the positive correlations between smart city attributes, on the attainment of urban sustainability. In order words, the smart city’s attributes such as IoT (Internet of Things) devices, smart infrastructure, and data-driven solutions are linked to the creation of a resilient urban environment in the face of urbanization and sustainability challenges. On the other hand, the study noted that the integration of smart technologies might lead to unintended consequences in urban planning. For example, an overemphasis on technology may overshadow human-centric approaches, which might potentially affect the community well-being and social cohesion. Study’s insights provide policymakers, urban planners, and players with an indepth knowledge of the pathways to harness smart city attributes for sustainable Najran urban development. The implications of this research extend beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia, serving as a valuable reference for regions worldwide grappling with similar urbanization and sustainability challenges in the 21st century. By harnessing the potential of smart cities, Saudi Arabia and other nations can pave the way for greener, more resilient urban futures.

    The influence of information and communication technology (ICT) on stakeholders' involvement and smart urban sustainability

    It is impossible to overstate the role that smart cities and the building resilience strategy play in the movement toward environmental sustainability, particularly in industrialized and developing nations. There has been a rise in the use of efficient systems to enhance built environment control and accomplish infrastructure development projects, and for this to be successful, countries around the globe, including Nigeria, need robust smart cities and buildings. Few researchers have looked at how smart cities and building projects might improve the sustainability practices of Nigeria's built environment in the context of environmental issues. The major research aim of this study is to investigate the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in advancing urban sustainability in the context of Lagos, Nigeria, amidst the city's rapid population growth and the implementation of smart city projects. The study's research questions include the following: First, How can information and communication technology (ICT) be leveraged to support the development of urban sustainability? Secondly, what is the impact of ICT on stakeholders' involvement and participation in urban sustainability? Thirdly, how can stakeholders' involvement and participation impact urban sustainability? Structural equation modeling using partial least squares (SmartPLS 3.0 Edition) as an analysis tool was used to assess the suggested model and the empirical study results in support of all the hypothesized associations. Results revealed that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is positively associated with smart urban sustainability. Also, a positive and significant influence of ICT on consolidating stakeholder involvement and participation is paramount. Lastly, smart city and building initiatives have the potential to significantly improve urban sustainability. The implication of the study enables the possibility to optimize the impact of an ICT-based urban environment, thereby creating sustainable and resilient communities that meet the needs and priorities of all members of society. © 2023 The Author(s)

    The Role of Smart Environment Initiatives on Environmental Degradation: Consolidating the Resilient Built Landscape

    Primarily in industrialized and some developing nations, the adoption of the smart city approach as a sustainable approach to the management and implementation of infrastructure developments has been rising. Initiatives to build resilience are critical for successful cities in these developing nations, like Nigeria. This research explores the various advantages of building resilience in Nigeria's smart cities in light of this growth. Few scholars have examined the building and smart city efforts aimed at enhancing Nigeria's built environment's sustainability in the context of the current global environmental issues. Thus, this study closes the gaps by evaluating the various aspects of building and the city's resilience with a focus on Lagos, the most populated metropolis in Africa. The following issues are covered with reviews of the literature: (i) the current Lagos Smart City projects; (ii) Smart City and Building initiatives in Nigeria; and (iii) the goal of robust resilience. By succinctly describing the strategic planning for smart city development, in addition to the opportunities discovered in the smart city and building initiatives, this paper contributes to the conversation around smart cities. This will aid in the documentation, forecasting, and future decision-making processes for Nigeria's Smart Cities. © 2022 IEEE.

    The significance of rural markets as a public space in Nigeria

    The signs and symbolic meanings of public space in Nigeria as perceived by the users relied on the existence of strong relationships between the people and their environment. This study centers on the users’ articulations, opinions, and views to public space such as traditional marketplace for the flourishing and sustainable development of indigenous people in South-West, Nigeria. This study adopts quantitative and subjective ways to elicit the views and opinions’ appraisals of the marketplace users and the term marketplace as a thirdplace. The findings reveal marketplace as a place of cultural inheritance, social arena for users, aesthetically oriented zone and a thirdplace, forming an integral component for the future rural neighbourhood planning and development in Nigeria.

    Strengthening Resilient Built Environments through Human Social Capital: A Path to Post-COVID-19 Recovery

    There are strong indications that the built environment has had a great influence on the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and the post-disaster recovery. The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected both human and global development, while efforts to combat this menace call for an integrated human social capital index. This research seeks to enhance understanding of how the built environment can be enhanced through resilience against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to investigate the impact of a resilient built environment on increasing resilience in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. The quantitative studies test the impact of four built environment resilience indices (built environment capital, disaster management indices, awareness of the COVID-19 pandemic, and built environment adaptive strategies) on human social capital and COVID-19 pandemic indices. This study reveals the role of human social capital in achieving a resilient built environment in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. Built environment capital, disaster management indices, and awareness of COVID-19 also indirectly affect the COVID-19 pandemic indices through human social capital. This study's implications are useful for post-COVID-19 recovery, which is important for future planning of the built environment in Nigeria.

    Unveiling the Impact of Urban Green Landscape on Quality of Life in Kaduna, Nigeria: Residents' Perceptions and Sustainable Strategies

    This study investigates the influence of urban green landscapes on the Quality of Life (QoL) in Kaduna Metropolis, Nigeria, focusing on residents' perceptions and sustainable urban development strategies. Conducted from May to July 2023, the quantitative research surveyed 377 residents using a questionnaire. Statistical analysis, including correlation and t-tests, was performed using SPSS version 23. Findings reveal a positive perception of urban green spaces, significantly contributing to residents' QoL. Key results include high satisfaction with green areas enhancing environmental beauty (Mean=4.88, SD=0.90) and providing recreational appeal (Mean=4.45, SD=0.95). Additionally, these areas significantly impact perceived value (Mean=4.78, SD=0.93), prestige (Mean=4.92, SD=8.18), and attachment to the environment (Mean=4.71, SD=0.831). Residents with accessible and functional green spaces express higher satisfaction levels (Cronbach’s Alpha > 0.9). The study underscores the importance of urban greenery in improving urban living conditions and offers strategic recommendations for sustainable urban planning. Addressing a gap in literature, this research provides empirical insights into residents' perspectives within Kaduna Metropolis, contributing to academic discourse and practical urban development approaches.

    Urban resilience in the digital age: The influence of Information-Communication Technology for sustainability

    In the pursuit of advancing urban sustainability within the unique backdrop of Nigeria's built environment and its environmental challenges, this study presents the significance of information and communication technology (ICT). Undertaking this research holds immense importance in illuminating the possibilities inherent in leveraging ICT to foster urban sustainability. The study's objectives encompass a comprehensive investigation into the multifaceted contributions of ICT to urban sustainability, while also delving into its impact on stakeholder engagement and participation in these sustainability endeavors. Addressing an identified gap, the study sheds light on the critical nexus between stakeholders' active involvement and the resulting impact on urban sustainability. This connection serves as a crucial yet under-explored avenue within the broader discourse on leveraging ICT for sustainable urban development. The study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to evaluate a proposed model and analyze empirical data. The results of the study highlight the critical role of ICTs in urban sustainability (beta = 0.614, R2 = 0.85), demonstrating its capacity to enhance efficiency; which promotes sustainability practices, and improves the quality of life for urban residents. The findings of this study have significant implications, as they suggest the potential for optimizing the impact of ICT-based urban environments to meet the diverse needs and priorities of society as a whole. By leveraging ICT effectively, countries can create a robust smart environment that contributes to sustainable development and addresses environmental concerns. To leverage the benefits of ICT, however, appropriate attention should be committed to the execution of smart urban sustainability through stakeholder participation and involvement. The implication of the study enables the possibility to optimize the impact of an ICT-based urban environment, thereby creating sustainable and resilient communities that meet the needs and priorities of all members of society.
