Abstract
The writer of the book Actors and Acting in Shakespeare's Time John H. Astington points out that "A seventeen or eighteen-year-old youth playing a female role would not look or sound the same as a twelve-year-old boy; male performers of such diverse ages appeared together on stage in female roles in the pre-Restoration theatre, usually with the older actors in the longer and more taxing roles" (2010).
