dc.description.abstract | Structure and Thermal Characterization
ofLithium-Ion Batteries
LA lithium-ion battery typically consists of a negative anode, a positive terminal cathode, an electrolyte, a
separator, a current collector, and an enclosure. The electrodes in lithium-ion batteries are the main
component in determining the battery capacity amount and energy density amount. In the case of a
lithium-ion battery, charging and discharging occurs by the movement of lithium ions between the
positive and negative terminals. Lithium-ion battery cells are prismatic and cylindrical. The cathode
material of the battery is produced in different structures. The structures of cathode materials can be
examined in three groups. These are layered structures, cubic structures and olivine structures. The
preferred lithium-composite materials in the cathode structure are lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO),
lithium nickelate (LiNiO2), lithium manganate (LiMn2O), lithium cobaltate (LiCoO2) and lithium nickelmanganese oxide (LiNiO2). The nickel element has the highest concentration of active content among
the cobalt and manganese elements used in the cathode electrode. Therefore, the capacity of a lithiumion battery increases as the density of the element nickel increases. Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO) as
spinels2) and lithium manganese oxide (LiM2O4) and layered oxides such as LiMPO4 as olivines are
