Weekly Press Release of Istanbul Gelisim University (January 13-17, 2020)
Abstract
Istanbul Gelisim University will host the 6th International Middle East Symposium this year. Many
local and international scientists will come together within the scope of the symposium themed
“Seeking Stability in the Middle East”.
Prof. Dr. Şenol Durgun, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations gave
information about the symposium and also evaluated the processes in the Middle East. Then continued as
follows: “The Middle East region is the focal point of international politics due to ongoing conflicts as a
result of global power strife. In addition to the hegemonic struggle between regional and global powers,
problems such as “ethnic and sectarian conflicts”, “terrorism and the refugee crisis” have become the main
characteristics of the region. On the other hand, theoretical perspectives based on western perceptions, such as “nation-state” and “modernization”, make the scientists studying
on the regional issues miss the unique dynamics and political breaking points of the region. In order to put forward the approaches that have the potential to bring peace and
stability to the region, there is a need for research that takes into account the unique characteristics of the region.”
