Novel and Highly Efficient Antibacterial PLA Composites Prepared with Liquidambar Orientalis Oil and Ag@g-C3N4 Nanocomposite
(Springer, 2025) Durmuş, Zehra; Köferstein, Roberto; Özgen, Arzu; Lindenberg, Titus; Maijenburg, A. Wouter; Durmuş, Ali
Flexible PLA-based antibacterial composite films were prepared using a natural oil, Liquidambar orientalis, as bio-based plasticizer, and 2D graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) decorated with Ag nanoparticles with a particle size of 10–30 nm as antibacterial agent (Ag@g-C3N4). This structurally designed antibacterial nanocomposite was synthesized with the preparation of g-C3N4 by high-temperature annealing followed by the reduction of silver salt onto g-C3N4. The Ag@gC3N4 nanocomposite exhibited a surface area value of 18 g/m2 . PLA/Ag@g-C3N4 composite films were prepared with solution casting method by introducing 30 phr of L. orientalis oil and various amounts (1, 2 and 4 phr) of Ag@g-C3N4. It was found that 30 phr of L. orientalis oil successfully plasticized the PLA and reduced its glass transition temperature from 60 °C to 43 °C and its melting temperature more than 10 °C by reducing the strong interactions and hydrogen bonds between PLA chains. L. orientalis oil also acted as a dispersion agent for the Ag@g-C3N4 nanocomposite particles and significantly improved their antibacterial activity. Antibacterial tests performed using Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC BAA 747) indicated that introducing a small amount of 2D Ag@g-C3N4 nanocomposite particles into PLA yielded superior antibacterial activity.

Development and validation of a human-machine interface for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) control via hand gesture teleoperation
(Elsevier Ltd, 2025) Çakmak Bolat, Fevzi; Avcı, Mustafa Cem
In this research, a drone-style unmanned aerial vehicle is maneuvered using hand gestures through the creation of a specialized glove design. The analytical formulas pertaining to the drone framework developed during the research were derived, leading to the establishment of a mathematical representation. These formulas were implemented in the Matlab & Simulink environment, and simulations of the system based on this mathematical representation were conducted. Next, to carry out verification tests, a unique device was crafted and set up for the drone, enabling real-time data exchange with the glove. A series of distinct signal sets for the glove were examined to confirm the functionality of the system. After confirming the control mechanism, it was seamlessly incorporated into the electronic hardware framework, leveraging the Arduino Uno microcontroller as the focal point. Within the hand gesture apparatus, an innovative circuit was devised, managed by the Atmega328P microcontroller chip. The primary motivation behind this exploration resides in the desire to establish a user interface for UAV operators that is both seamless and unobtrusive, moving beyond the artificial and cumbersome elements tied to traditional control systems. For this purpose, the research aims to empower users to utilize hand gestures—frequently employed in various everyday scenarios—for piloting activities, thus improving user performance and simplicity of use. The findings of this study highlight the parity between the glove apparatus designed for hand gesture manipulation and the conventional joystick-based system, thereby confirming its effectiveness for multiple applications. Furthermore, a one-handed method was embraced for hand gesture control, with the supplementary aim of offering pilot training opportunities for individuals with upper limb impairments.

Trace determination of cobalt in heather leaf tea by matrix matching calibration assisted flame atomic absorption spectrometry following a dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction utilizing a Schiff base ligand
(Elsevier B. V., 2025) Atakol, Arda; Zeydanlı, Damla; Göver, Tuğçe; Atakol, Melike; Serbest, Hakan; Karakebap, Kübra; Büyük, Muhammed Ali; Atakol, Orhan; Bakirdere, Sezgin
In this study, an analytical method that involves dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction for extraction and enrichment of Co was developed for its determination in heather leaf tea infusions. N,N’-bis(2-hydroxyacetophenylidene)-1,3-propanediamine was utilized to form the complex extracted in chloroform with methanol as a dispersive solvent. The experimental parameters were optimized to allow for an enhancement of detection power by 35.6-folds compared to direct FAAS measurements while lowering the limit of detection to 0.0154 mg/L and the limit of quantification to 0.0513 mg/L and providing a linear range of 0.050–0.75 mg/L. Spiked recovery experiments were conducted on two brands of heather leaf tea where a matrix matching strategy was employed for further reduction of interferences. The recovery results obtained in the range of 78.7–128.4 % supported the accuracy of the proposed method that promises an economical and easy-to-apply process for the trace determination of cobalt in herbal tea matrices.
